The causes of the taper crazies (and how to get over them)

“It’s just Doctor f’ing Who!!!” I remonstrate with myself as the tears well in an ’emotional’ farewell scene between Amy Pond and the Doctor. Here’s the ‘big and tough’ marathon and ultra runner tearing up at a kids programme! Sheesh!

I’ve got the taper crazies. I’ve got them bad. So much worse than any other race. Mood swings (coupled with a heightened emotional state), phantom pains, bouts of nerves. The lot.

tapering-runner-warningWhat are the taper crazies, really? Basically a collection of psychological and physiological effects brought on by the rapid reduction in exercise level of the taper. And having the crazies can suck. Big time! So, what causes the taper crazies?

Marathon Training : A strange case of lack of pre-race nerves

I’ve got a marathon in 11 days. I’m not feeling anxious, there’s no nerves. The days are counting down but there isn’t a noticeable building of anxiety, fretting or fear of what’s coming.

Maybe it will come next week? At the moment I feel a (strange to me) calm.

Maybe it’s just the eye of the storm? Maybe next week will be a hurricane of mixed emotions – nerves, elation, fear of failure, giddy anticipation of the starting line.

I’m hoping not. I mean, I don’t want to go into the marathon like an ice man, that would indicate hubris and unbridled arrogance (and that I’m a bit of a d*#% – no-one gets to be arrogant going into a marathon). But, at the same time being a bundle of nerves, self-doubting and anxious isn’t the way to run well either. Somewhere in the middle would be perfect. Read the rest of this entry

Inspire me Wednesday #9

“I have Spina Bifida…I’ve never really researched what it is or what it does, just because I don’t really focus on that…”

This guy amazes me. He does whatever he wants to do, he just figures out how to make it work for him. And he doesn’t sweat the small stuff. Hell, he doesn’t seem to even sweat the big stuff!

Aaron ‘Wheelz’ Fotheringham – Wheelchair Action Sports from Unit Clothing on Vimeo.

As runners we often forget two key things – we are fortunate to be runners, and that we mustn’t sweat the small stuff.

Happy running everyone!

Inspire me Wednesday #8

For today’s ‘Inspire Me Wednesday’ I thought I would share the adventure of Ryan Mills and his attempt to cross Death Valley on foot.

Ryan Mills came up with a wild plan to trek across Death Valley National Park in 8 days on nothing but his 2 feet. Ryan hatched this plan not for his own personal glory or monetary gain but to attempt something seemingly impossible with the hopes of inspiring people. Inspiring us to step out of our comfort zone. Inspiring us to take a leap. Inspiring us to attempt something in our own lives that we may deem impossible.

Someone who runs a marathon a day, make that a TRAIL marathon a day, for 8 days across some of the remotest and inhospitable landscape around. Just to say he did it, and inspire others along the way. I’m inspired. You?

Happy (and inspired) running everyone!

true progress quietly and persistently moves along without notice. St Francis of Assisi

Hopefully this quote of St Francis of Assisi can provide some motivation for those who are using running to make a change in their life or simply to try and be the best they can be.

Be persistent in chasing your goals and after enough steps you will reach them.

Happy running everyone!

Inspire me Wednesday #7

For today’s ‘Inspire Me Wednesday’ I thought I would share Saucony’s ‘Find Your Strong’ Project.

Is it muscle? Or is it something more? Is it measured in miles or milliseconds? Is it your best time or your worst day? Maybe strong is just what you have left when you’ve used up all your weak…

My strong? My worst runs, and doing them anyway. And you. If I quit, how can I tell you not to quit?

So, tell me, tell all of us, what is your Strong?

Happy (and inspired) running everyone!
