T-3 to #RagnarFLK
Three days out from Ragnar and overall it’s looking good. A couple of little hiccoughs have cropped up, but they’re pretty minor. My HRM has finally packed it in (separate blog post to come), and a couple of our team mates have had to pull out due to strike action at their company, meaning they can’t travel. We have to cover a few extra miles but I’m much more sorry for them after all the effort they put into their preparation and then having to pull out at the last minute. I’d be gutted in their situation! Luckily our team captain found a ring-in so we’re at least five for the race.
Other than that it’s currently all green lights. I feel fit (plus my Training Peaks chart says that today I hit ‘0’ on my training stress balance and should be ‘+10’ on race day), my new kicks for the race arrived, and I’ve got all the kit I need for the run.
I fly out on Thursday morning from London and thanks to BA having a direct flight to Miami, plus the time zone change, I land in Miami at 1pm on the same day. I’ve always liked flying West for this reason – you sit for 10 hours in a metal tube flying through the sky but arrive only having lost four hours out of your day. Great! The way back though? Bleurgh…
While jetlag is never great for races I figure there’s not much I can do about it. If you’re going to fly 4000 miles for a race then waddya expect? That said, being slightly ahead in the time zones will make the pre-dawn sections of the relay comparatively easier for me. The Americans who have come East will feel like they’re lacing up at midnight. I’ll feel like I’m lacing up at 9am according to my internal body clock. Come Saturday afternoon when we roll into Key West after 200 miles and 30+ hours of running it might be a different story but I figure I’ll be so delirious with fatigue (and probably a fair bit of pain) by then I won’t even know what time it is anyway!
